What the file is for
llms.txt is a plain-markdown map of a site, served at /llms.txt, that tells a language model what the business is, what it sells and which pages matter. It was proposed by Answer.AI as a convention rather than a standard: a clear file costs an hour and no engine promises to read it. Write it for the model that does; do not expect it to lift a ranking on its own.
What makes one usable
- An H1 with the site's name, then one blockquote line saying what it does.
- Sections for Product, Pricing, Docs and About, each a list of links with a short description.
- Absolute https:// URLs, so the text still makes sense when it is quoted out of context.
- A link to the page a buyer should land on, not a dump of every page on the site.
The validator above applies the same rules. If a file already exists at the address, the tool shows what to fix before you replace it, so the draft you paste is one a model can follow.
